Resveratrol is a polyphenol type flavonoid currently exciting great interest as a potential boon to health. Like other flavonoids and polyphenols, it is a very useful anti-oxidant in its own right, but it also has attracted attention as a potential solution to the so-called "French paradox ".
This is a term used to describe the phenomenon, which has long been a mystery to medical science, in which rates of cardiovascular disease in France have remained low compared to those in the rest of the developed world, despite widespread national consumption of a diet high in animal fats and cholesterol, and firmly entrenched tobacco habit. Of course, France also has many advantages of the so-called Mediterranean diet through high intake of fresh fruits and vegetables, oily fish and olive oil, but there are good reasons to think that the consumption of red wine may be the real explanation for the apparent paradox.
is known in every case that moderate alcohol consumption has a significant protective effect on the cardiovascular system, reducing the disease by as much as 20-30%, but conventional medical opinion characteristically cautious in acknowledging that the resveratrol in red wine can have any benefit over and above those that would in any case be provided by the alcohol. However, the role of fat-soluble anti-oxidants to protect the cardiovascular system from harmful free radicals attack is well understood, and therefore it seems that the polyphenols contained in red wine can only be beneficial. Laboratory tests, moreover, showed resveratrol to have significant anti-coagulant and anti-inflammatory effects.
For the purpose of obtaining a listing of resveratrol from wine you need to know is contained mainly in the skin of red or black grapes, and is thus found in significant quantities only in those wines produced initial pulp fermentation which allows the development of alcohol Leach Colour and other useful substances from the skin. It follows that the more the pulp fermentation is allowed to continue richer and darker colors of wine and more resveratrol will be found. General types of roses and bright red might contain some, but white wines produced by fermentation of the juice itself will provide little, if any.
is usually red wine produced in sunnnier climate near the Mediterranean, and the New World, which will be the richest in resveratrol, and dark red wines of this type can provide as much as 2 mg of resveratrol Umali 5 oz glass. But, unfortunately, from the health point of view, and also tend to be strongest in the alcohol and the so-called "congeners" which accentuate hangovers.
, but fortunately for those who do not like wine, or are worried about drinking alcohol, other sources of resveratrol are available. The amount of food varies, but the best sources are peanuts and red grapes, which can be given anywhere between 0.3 and 1.3 mg per cup. Bilberries and cranberries can also be a useful resource.
resveratrol supplements are also now available, primarily in the form of red wine or red grape extract, which will also contain other anti-oxidant polyphenols. Manufacturer's recommended dose will typically provide between 10 and 50 mg, which would require a very high, and potentially dangerous, the level of wine consumption to achieve regularly.
That said, there is no known toxicity from taking resveratrol, as such, although its blood thinning properties will tend to prevent blood clotting ability and therefore is not recommended for those taking anti-coagulant drugs such as warfarin, or certain types of anti-inflammatory, including aspirin. Needless to say, however, other types of toxicity problems may occur if the alcohol used in excess as the main or only source.
But, as noted above, moderate drinking is generally recognized to be beneficial for health, especially for the cardiovascular system. So, it seems that the message is: if you want to enjoy a few glasses of wine with dinner, then go right ahead. I have that age old pleasure enhanced by the knowledge that contains resveratrol, and doing some good.
