Did you know that Halloween is one of the oldest holidays, and dressing up in costumes for this day dates back thousands of years? Every culture throughout history has had a hand in bringing something to the table when it comes to Halloween costumes and traditions.
Celts, who lived 2000 years ago in an area that is now Ireland, Great Britain and northern France, celebrated their New Year on 1 November This day marked the end of the summer harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter. They believed that the night before New Year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. 31st October, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that spirits of the dead returned to earth. To commemorate the event, the Celtic priests built huge sacred bonfires, where people gathered to burn crops and animals as a sacrifice of the Celtic gods. During the celebration wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins. When the celebration was over, they re-lit their hearth fires, which were extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to protect them during the upcoming winter.
Later in history, the Catholic Church wanted to do away with the pagan beliefs and tried to turn Halloween into a festival of saints. They called it the "All Souls Day", a night before he was called "All Hallows Eve", where the supernatural and lives come zajedno.Američka tradition of "trick-or-treating" dates from the early All Souls' Day parades in England. Although the costumes have come a long way from the "animal heads and skins" that are worn by the Celts, we are proud to carry on the tradition of dressing for Halloween. Today, costumes range from sweet and innocent in horrific satanic. Although in the past was thought of Halloween as a holiday geared towards children, more and more adults are getting into the spooky spirit of things make up a large percentage of costume buyers. It just goes to show that Halloween is fun at any age!
